Learning to Be Last

About this blog:

The “Learning to be Last” blog is designed to continue the conversation on a theology of Christian leadership begun in the 2008 book by the same blog title. I co-authored the book with Dr. Stan Toler. I encourage you to read the statement in the PURPOSE tab to gain a broader perspective on the intent and perimeters of the blog. Your comments are welcomed.

The blog is developed not only for me to share my faith journey in exploring the leadership implications and dimensions of the blog title, but for you to share your journey as well. You are encouraged to share the joy and painful experiences of your journey in leading others within a faith community. Ask questions. Make comments. Share your stories and your journey.

Take a few minutes to glance through the tabs on the tool bar. Information about the Fairbanks International School of Communication and the blog host is found in the ABOUT tab; the 54 IBOE schools with whom I work are linked in the IBOE tab; connect into the potential of serving in the IBOE schools through the REGISTRY tab; an interdisciplinary academic journal that explores the intersection of Christian conviction, culture, and education is linked in the DIDACHE tab; reflections and photos from recent travels are included in the TRAVELS tab; also from time to time I will post school PROJECTS with which I am involved.

The WRITINGS tab opens for you a menu of sermons, speeches, addresses, articles and books I have presented or written since 1989 when I began my ministry at Mount Vernon Nazarene University. In addition, my inaugural addresses at the Asia-Pacific Nazarene Theological Seminary (1985), and Mount Vernon Nazarene University (1990) are included, as well as a 1988 address I gave in Singapore at the Pan Asia Christian Education Conference titled, “Servant Leadership for a Servant Community.”

My hunch is that we will reference various entries in this section as we engage in conversations on the blog.

The READING tab will reflect the books I have read during 2009 or am currently reading. From time to time I will include book reviews, book discussions, recommended books and links to other sites as resources on our journey of leading others in our faith communities.

I will post on the blog an article, a book summary , a project or a thought on leading others that has caught my attention and I want to share with you. I seek your comments on these entries. Share with me a question, your journey, a story, or an article you have written or are in the process of writing that is relevant to the discussion.

I ask you to join me as the blog is launched. We can learn from each other and serve as an encourager to each other.
