I’ve just finished Keith Drury’s “Common Ground - What All Christians Believe and Why it Matters.”

The book consists of 10 page essays on the elements of the Apostle’s Creed. Since the earliest days of Christianity the Apostle’s Creed has stated the faith of the followers of Jesus. Drury takes each phrase of this ancient creed and helps us understand why it is included in this crucial statement of faith.

The book isn’t long and is easy to read. At times the prose is absolutely beautiful and reads like poetry. The chapter on “Jesus Christ” is very good. Also, the chapter on “Forgiveness of sins” blessed my heart.

Drury includes considerable church history in his essays, helping us understand how the Church arrived at each particular statement in the creed.

Even a life time “low churcher” like me comes away with a fresh appreciation for this ancient creed which has been a part of Christianity from it’s first baby steps.

Keith Drury has a thought provoking article: In search of Mediocrity — he reminds us that most of us live somewhere in the middle and specifically talks about Churches, Marriage, and Spiritual Passion. Here’s his take on churches in middle:

“I think ordinary churches deserve more praise. I’m talking about churches in the big fat center who don’t have thousands of attendees and sprawling TV ministries. They aren’t famous and nobody ever asks their pastor to teach “How I Did It” seminars. But the pastor and people show up every week and worship and study and serve each other and love their community. Good for you! I wish more of my students wanted to go to ordinary churches.”

Being a Nazarene, I found this article highly entertaining. I think we are being made fun of, but I take it in the spirit in which it was written…and laughed my way all the way through it.
What I Like About Nazarenes

After doing my post on “who is the church” I came across: this article from Keith Drury. I remember reading it but didn’t realize how much it had influenced my thinking. It is one of those deals where I started off saying, “Keith Drury wrote….” then in a month or two said, “I read somewhere” to, after a year or so, “I’ve been thinking.” So, to give credit where credit is due, I thought I had better post the link here!
